Education
School-aged children living in Commerce City are served by two school districts: School District 27J and Adams County School District 14, with over 15 schools serving the educational needs of students. Parochial and private schools are also available within the area. For students and adult learners who are ready to obtain a degree in higher education, nearby colleges and universities include Front Range Community College, Community College of Aurora, Red Rocks Community College, University of Colorado School of Medicine, University of Colorado at Denver, University of Colorado at Boulder, and Regis University, to name a few.
Economy & Job Market
Commerce City’s economy is strongly supported by the area’s oil refinery, which has a capacity of producing 90,000 barrels a day and is operated by Suncor Energy. Residents of Commerce City are only a thirty minute drive to the metropolitan city of Denver, home to a number of big name companies and corporations, including Molson Coors Brewing Company, Lockheed Martin, Kroger Company, Xcel Energy, and United Airlines. The city of Denver is also home to the Denver Federal Center, Denver Mint, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Mining and energy also play important roles in the area’s economy, with major companies such as Halliburton, Smith International, EnCana, and Noble Energy offering residents many employment opportunities. Additionally, ConocoPhillips recently announced that they will open a corporate learning center on a 432-acre plot of land in Louisville that was once owned by Sun Microsystems. The learning center should be up and running by 2011 or 2012.
Other popular industries of employment include construction, health care, accommodation and food services, and administrative and management services. Business travelers can easily travel in and out of Commerce City by way of the Denver International Airport and Front Range Airport.
Attractions & Points of Interests
Looking for something to do in and around Commerce City isn’t an issue that residents face since there’s plenty to do on any given day. If you’re new to the area, then the first things you should check out are the greyhound races and horse races at the Mile High Greyhound Park dog track. Located in Commerce City, admission is free for everyone and the facilities that the park offers are ideal for family events, corporate functions, and even wedding receptions as there is an on-site Events Center to serve all of your needs. Special suites with views of the track and the spectacular Denver skyline are also available pending reservations.
The state of Colorado is home to a number of professional sports teams, including Colorado Rapids, Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Avalanche hockey team. Sports lovers will also want to check out Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids, a professional soccer team. Built on an impressive 36 acres of land, the stadium seats up to 26,000 attendees for certain events and features youth soccer fields, 24 fully-lit pro fields, and has hosted the Mile High Music Festival in addition to the 2010 World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and the United States.
Museum, transportation and history buffs will have plenty of points of interest to head to, such as the Adams County Museum, Front Wheel Drive Auto Museum, Forney Museum of Transportation, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Wings Over the Rockies Museum, and the Molly Brown House Museum, to name a few.
Parks & Recreation
The Parks & Recreation department does an excellent job in providing residents with miles of open spaces for play and leisure. With 17 municipal parks, over 25 miles of trails including the Sand Creek Regional Greenway, 360 acres of open spaces, a softball complex at Pioneer Park, and three recreational facilities, residents have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and community facilities of Commerce City.
The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge offers visitors a number of outdoor activities that range from free tours and weekend hikes to catch and release fishing. Visitors will even get a chance to observe the wildlife that call the wetlands and woodlands of the Wildlife Refuge home, including coyotes, the black-tailed prairie dog, bald eagles, many species of owls and hawks, and white-tailed deer.
Golfers of all skill levels have the advantage of playing at Buffalo Run Golf Course, home of the 2006 Denver Open Championship. An 18-hole course, Buffalo Run was designed by architect Keith Foster and features 65 bunkers and greenside lakes; a challenging play for advanced players and novices alike. Other nearby courses includes Riverdale Dunes Golf Course, Edelweiss Club Trachten, Timberline Tall Club of Denver, and Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.
